The U.S. Marine Corps will adopt gender-neutral titles for many of its service occupations, USA Today reports.

It's part of a larger plan to make the corps' entry-level training for enlistees coed; the corps remains the only military branch to segregate its enlisted trainees.

Examples of titles that will be changed are reconnaissance man, fire support man, and field artillery sensor support man, the paper said. In those cases, "man" is likely to simply be dropped.

Other titles where "man" is part of a one-word title, like midshipman, are unlikely to change because they are "iconic."

"As we achieve full integration of the force…this is an opportunity to update the position titles and descriptions themselves to demonstrate through this language that women are included in these [military occupational specialties]," Navy Secretary Ray Mabus wrote in a recent memo.
