Simone Biles/Twitter

Over the course of the last 10 days, Simone Biles has absolutely enthralled Olympic fans (and even the most casual viewers) around the world with her astounding four gold medal performances and bronze performance. But we should probably give her one more gold medal for winning the heart of America’s hunky sweetheart and human golden retriever Zac Efron. On Tuesday, the two of them met down in Rio, but before you write this off as any other earnestly excited celebrity meeting an insanely successful athlete, there’s something you should know: This meeting between Biles and Efron is about three years in the making.

Biles’ love for Efron runs deep, since at least 2013.

And like any properly devoted fangirl, she has a life-size cutout of the actor, a gift she received for Christmas 2014, and she told NBC Nightly News that she used to kiss the cardboard Zac on the cheek from time to time because she’s a goddamn American hero.

But it was her appearance on Ellen back in March (where Ellen gifted her a leotard emblazoned with Zac’s face) that really brought her love for Efron into the spotlight. Then on July 7, 2016, everything changed. Zac Efron tweeted at Biles, wishing her good luck for the Olympic trials—not that she needed it.

Biles responded in a most reasonable manner, the only way a young woman could when faced with acknowledgment from their ultimate crush.

Since then the two have been trading tweets, and their relationship (and our fanfic fodder) has blossomed before our eyes.

BUT THEN YESTERDAY, EVERYTHING CHANGED. ZAC EFRON WENT DOWN TO RIO, SURPRISED THE THE FIVE-TIME OLYMPIC MEDALIST WHILE DOING A SPOT FOR TODAY IN RIO. Hoda, you schemer.

AND EFRON KISSED HER ON HER FACE. HE PUT HIM LIPS ON HER CHEEKS PEOPLE JUST LIKE HOW SHE KISSED HER CUTOUT OF HIM.

Let’s break that last one down:
