Tinder

The number of alleged crimes potentially involving dating apps Tinder and Grindr has increased more than more than 700% in the past three years in the United Kingdom, according to data released by the Press Association.

These include reports of rape, attempted murder, and illicitly luring victims. The figures come from police reports where the apps are mentioned. While this does not necessarily mean the app was used by the alleged criminal, there are documented cases in which they were.

"They said users were vulnerable to 'sextortion' and warned the figures may be 'just the tip of the iceberg' as many victims will be too scared or embarrassed to contact police," the Association said.

An unnamed spokesman for LGBT advocacy group Stonewall told the Association the figures were “shocking” and advised people to tell a friend where they are going before meeting anyone on the apps.

The trend is not unique to the U.K. Last year the Philadelphia Police Department warned that criminals were using the apps to identify and locate potential victims after two men were implicated in assault and robbery cases involving the app.
