Last week, Ben & Jerry's came out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement with a surprisingly nuanced, well thought-out blog post explaining what systemic racism is, how it affects black people, and why supporting Black Lives Matter doesn't mean devaluing white lives.
For reasons that should surprise no one, the people behind Blue Lives Matter, an organization that claims to "serve and honor law enforcement," is now calling for a nationwide boycott of the popular Vermont-based ice creamery. In an open letter published earlier this week, Blue Lives Matter accused Ben & Jerry's of spreading misinformation about the role that police departments play in the institutionalized violence against black people.
"Many companies have offered misguided statements of support for Black Lives Matter in the past, with the false belief that they are expressing support for civil rights," the group expressed. "While we believe that other companies were misguided, Ben & Jerry’s campaign is dangerous."
Blue Lives Matter's statement went on to accuse Black Lives Matter of actually being a group of troublemakers dedicated to disrupting nuclear families, agitating for taxpayer-funded reparations for black people, and the dissolution of charter schools.
Ultimately, Blue Lives Matter said, the Black Lives Matter movement is something to be feared.
"By spreading these false and misleading statements, Ben & Jerry’s lends an appearance of legitimacy to the baseless claims that police officers are killing men based on the color of their skin," the letter continues. "This message has inspired the assassination and attempted assassination of police officers, and it costs officers their lives."
Ben and Jerry's was not immediately available for comment in response to this apocalyptic nonsense, but Twitter's been having a field day with ideas for Black Lives Matter-inspired flavors for ice cream.
