Ever since we heard that Katherine Johnson, the brilliant and groundbreaking female black American physicist who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015, was getting a biopic (and that Taraji P. Henson would be playing her, AND that Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae were also involved)—well, we’ve been very, very excited. And last night, the trailer for Hidden Figures finally dropped.
The NASA pioneer's story is particularly relevant given that not only are women and black people the most likely to leave STEM field jobs, per the American Institutes for Research, but black women only make up 3% of the computing workforce and 1% of the engineering workforce, according to the American Association of University Women.
But a movie about a black single mother STEM ace? Who helped put a man in space? And it’s happy? And it’s all true? Count me in. Also +1 for casting America’s Daddy Kevin Costner as the Important White Man.
